What is a Recovery Coach?

Also known as a peer support specialist – according to OASAS (The Office of Addiction Services and Supports), Recovery Coaching is a form of strength-based supports for persons in or seeking recovery from alcohol and other drugs, as well as other addictions.

Self-directed by the recoveree, a Recovery Coach provides expertise in supporting successful change.
Recovery Coaching is goal oriented; a recovery coach will focus on any goals that are important to the individual

A Recovery Coach also:

  • Focuses on honoring values and making principle-based decisions
  • Uses current strengths to reach future goals
  • Becomes an accountability partner to help sustain recovery
  • Helps the recoveree access recovery services as well as community services needed to support recovery i.e. benefits, health care, housing etc.

Recovery Coaches Do Not:

  • Diagnose or treat substance use disorder
  • Explore past feelings and trauma (we focus on the future)
  • Make decisions for the Recoveree
  • Monitor or report abstinence
  • Motivate through fear of negative consequences
  • Prescribe one specific pathway to recovery
  • Tell a person how to lead a life in recovery

Who would benefit from a Recovery Coach?

  • People in recovery from addiction themselves
  • People seeking recovery from addictions
  • Friends and Family who have been affected by another’s addiction

Who is eligible for a Recovery Coach through FOR-DO?

Recovery Coaching is provided by FOR-DO’s trained Recovery Coaches, free of charge to:

  • Anyone who is looking to initiate or sustain their recovery, or anyone who has been affected by another’s addiction
